What a group of year 6 leavers can teach us about Teamwork
I was blown away by the brilliance of the year 6 end of year production of Grease the Musical at my son George’s school last week.
60 kids, 4 weeks. 1 awesome show.
Yes, I am probably a little bias, but I couldn’t help but think that this group of 10 and 11 year olds can teach us a fair bit about great teamwork.
Here are my takeouts (as cued from my conversation with a rather buzzing George afterwards):-
No egos. Every single child valued for their unique contribution. No child better than another. No separate applause for the lead roles. This group operated as one unit, recognising that the whole production would only work if each child played their part. The props team were as important as the dancers, who were as important as the lead roles, who were as important as set design.
A North Star. These guys watched the original movie (slightly edited!) and were inspired to bring it to their stage. They set their heights high and didn’t deviate from them. They were never going to be anything short of freakin’ awesome.
Collaboration. This wasn’t about putting people down, it was about building people up. Yes, there were moments in rehearsals when individuals became stricken with nerves and self doubt, yes, there were times when they had to do things a bit differently than planned, but the collective never doubted their ability. They supported and encouraged each other to be the best they could be.
Attitude. This was about what they could do. They all stepped well in to their brave, displaying true courage and determination. I could hear George practicing the songs in his room, the play station was replaced by the Grease DVD which (to my great delight) has become a constant sound track in our house recently.
Celebrating the journey, as well as the destination. From day 1 this was an experience filled with fun and celebration. It began with a trip to the cinema to be surprised with what they would be performing. Small wins and achievements were recognised and applauded along the way. On the night, each and every one of them sparkled on that stage, oozing pure delight in what they had collectively achieved.
I think every person deserves to experience working in a team like this. A bunch of people compelled in to action by a common purpose; holding each other up and working together to produce something phenomenal; and having a great time along the way. This is what gets real results. This for me is about the impact of finding real joy at work.
Thank you year 6. May you hold on to what makes you incredible and may these memories stay with you as you grow. I am heartened by the compassion and belief you show for one another, excited about the kind of leaders you will each become, the teams you will be part of, and what you will achieve.
